June & July

The wheat is in ear now, if you look closely you may be able to see the flowers, they look like tiny white speckles in this photograph. Unlike many flowering plants wheat does not rely on insects for pollination, so no need for bright flowers. Instead wheat is wind pollinated. Now the wheat is in ear we know it's not long until harvest.

Peas growing stronglyNow the weather is warming up, especially night-time temperatures, our peas have really started to grow well. Even though these peas where the last to be planted they will grow and mature so fast that they will be one of the first to be harvested! Peas are very useful as a crop because they add nutrients back into the soil, allowing the crop the following year to benefit greatly.

Generally the birds are not as visible as in the winter or spring because the foliage is denser and they spend more time in the nest, however providing a source of high quality food will still attract them to your feeders or birdtable. Farmer Brown's is here to help!

Around the farm the swallows have got a full nest and are frantically catching insects to feed the growing young, and under the eaves the house martens are doing likewise. House Marten Because the early summer was so dry, here at Farmer Brown's we have kept a muddy puddle wet with dishwater to provide the mud for the marten's and swallow's nests. Everywhere the birds are busy finding food for their young, every little helps so don't forget to put out some of Farmer Brown's wild bird seed or peanuts (from a wire mesh feeder).

Below is our usual photograph of the field of oats we have been following. Because these oats were planted in the spring they are not yet in ear, however given a few weeks they too will have grain forming.
